• The CST prepares the OR, instruments, and sterile field.
• Works as part of the surgical team (surgeon, nurse, anesthesia).

• Set up the sterile field and count instruments and sponges.
• Prepare and position the patient.

During surgery the CST maintains the sterile field and assists.

• Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
• Maintain sterile technique and monitor for breaks.
• Track sponges, needles, and instruments to prevent retention.
• Handle specimens correctly.

After surgery the CST helps close out safely.

• Complete final instrument and sponge counts.
• Assist with dressings and patient transfer.
• Break down and clean the OR.
• Prepare instruments for reprocessing.

CSTs perform supporting tasks around surgery.

• Manage inventory and supplies.
• Maintain equipment and the OR environment.
• Document procedures accurately.
• Support turnover between cases.
